School Council
The Education Reform Act of 1993 mandated the formation of a School Council in every public school in Massachusetts. As defined by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, “School councils are a representative, school building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers, and community members.” This council is entrusted with several responsibilities and assists the principal with issues related to the following:
- Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
- Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
- Reviewing the annual school budget
- Formulating a School Improvement Plan
