Music Program Overview
Students in Grades K-5 attend a weekly 45 minute music class. My goal, as a music teacher, is to help students learn to develop a sense of beat and rhythm, to teach them about music from different cultures, and to engage them so they grow an overall love and appreciation of music. Music education stimulates, challenges, and enriches students during their elementary school years and its value lasts a lifetime.
Kindergarten, Grade 1, & Grade 2
In the early elementary years, we work on setting up a strong foundation of basic music concepts, including rhythm, melody, and form. Students sing, listen, play instruments, and move to music. They begin to read basic music notation and learn about form and music terms. Students are introduced to a wide variety of music that represents different genres and cultures. Grade 2 students perform a musical in the spring.
Grade 3 & Grade 4
In Grades 3 & 4 our focus turns to reading notes on the staff, expanding rhythm reading skills, and learning to play the recorder. Playing the recorder allows students to experience playing a wind instrument, develop aural skills, and learn to play as an ensemble. During the second half of the Grade 4 year, students move on from the recorder and play percussion instruments, sing in parts, learn additional music concepts, compose using Garage Band, and learn about music from different genres and cultures. Grade 3 students perform a concert in May and Grade 4 students perform a musical in June.
Grade 5
Grade 5 music is a culmination of everything the students have learned during Kindergarten - Grade 4. We expand on music concepts, rhythm, composition, form, composers, play instruments in parts, sing in parts, and dance. All lessons are developed based on the National Standards for the Arts. Students in Grade 5 perform a Veterans Day performance in November.
Music After School Activities
Chorus
Students in Grades 3, 4, & 5 can participate in Chorus. It is held on Thursdays from dismissal until 4:00 PM. Participating in chorus helps students sing with more confidence, make new friendships, and develop a sense of belonging.
The Chorus performs annually at the Holbrook Festival of Lights, a concert in December, and a concert in May.
Beginner Band
Students in Grades 4 & 5 can join the Beginner Band. It is held on Wednesdays after school. Beginners are grouped together by instrument and are taught in small groups for 35-40 minutes. Students can select from the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or drums.
The Beginner Band performs two concerts a year, in February and May.
Experienced Band
Students in Grade 5, who participated in Beginner Band in Grade 4, can be in the Experienced Band. It is a continuation of Beginner Band and is held on Tuesdays after school. Experienced Band is taught in a full band setting each week. Once a month, each instrument group stays for additional sectional instruction for an additional 40 minutes. The goal of Experienced Band is to increase the student’s competency on their instrument as they gain more confidence and perform more challenging music.
The Experienced Band performs two concerts a year, in February and May.
